P1612 on Mazda means the immobilizer control module is failing to communicate with the PCM (powertrain control module) — the immobilizer transceiver ring around the ignition key cylinder reads the transponder chip in the key and confirms identity to the immobilizer module, which then handshakes with the PCM to allow fuel injection. If any link in that chain fails the PCM sets P1612 and refuses to start the engine (or starts and immediately stalls in some implementations). Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Try the spare key. If the spare starts the car and the primary key does not, the transponder in the primary key is dead and needs reprogramming (~$80-$150 at a dealer) or replacement of the key body. (2) Visual inspection of the transceiver ring around the ignition cylinder — on RX-8 and older Mazdas, the ring connector loosens with vibration and a reseated connector clears the code. (3) Ohm-test the transceiver coil if accessible: 1-3 ohms is typical across the antenna coil; open circuit means the ring is dead. (4) Scan for related codes — B-codes (body codes) starting with B19xx or B26xx indicate immobilizer-module-internal faults; U-codes (U010x, U015x) indicate CAN bus failure between the immobilizer module and PCM. (5) Most expensive: the immobilizer control module itself, which on RX-8 and 2004+ Mazda3/6 lives behind the kick panel or under the steering column and requires programming to the VIN ($300-$700 part plus dealer programming). Don't replace the PCM for P1612 — every shop has a story about a $1,500 PCM swap that didn't fix a $40 transceiver ring connector.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2004-2011 Mazda RX-8 with the Renesis rotary is the highest-frequency P1612 platform — the transceiver ring around the ignition cylinder is fragile, the connector vibrates loose, and the unique nature of the Renesis (flooded-engine restart cycles, frequent cold starts) compounds wear on the immobilizer system; many RX-8 P1612 cases resolve by reseating the ring connector or replacing the ring assembly ($150-$250). 2004-2009 Mazda3/6 with the 2.0L or 2.3L MZR engines see P1612 from the same transceiver-ring failure pattern but at lower volume. 2007-2013 CX-7 and CX-9 throw P1612 occasionally from immobilizer-module internal failures rather than transceiver issues — these typically require dealer programming after module replacement. Estimated repair: $80 (key reprogramming) to $900 (immobilizer module + programming at a dealer on CX-9).
