P1611 on a Saab is Misfire Code Saved Past Drive Cycle — a Saab-specific status code that latches when a previous misfire event (P0300-P0304 on a 4-cyl Saab) was severe enough to be retained in non-volatile memory past the warm-up + cooldown drive cycle that would normally clear a soft code. P1611 is not a diagnostic target on its own — it is a flag that says 'an underlying misfire happened and the ECM wants you to know it was real, not transient.' Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Read all stored codes and pending codes — the supporting P03XX misfire code (cylinder-specific or random) is the real diagnostic target. If only P1611 is present with no current misfire code, the underlying fault has self-corrected or the customer drove enough drive cycles to clear the soft code while P1611 stuck. (2) Read Mode $06 misfire counters per cylinder — Saab Trionic ECMs store per-cylinder misfire history that survives even when the active code clears, and the cylinder with the highest count is the next coil/plug to check. (3) Inspect the DI cassette (9-5 B205/B235) or individual COP coils (9-3 B207) for the usual carbon-tracking, oil contamination, or worn spring contacts. (4) Check spark plug gap and condition — Saab NGK BCPR7ES at 0.028-0.030 in is the spec; eroded gaps past 0.040 in cause intermittent misfires that set P1611 even after the active code clears. Do NOT clear P1611 and hand the car back without root-causing the original misfire — on the 9-5 B235 in particular, P1611 is the canary that the DI cassette is failing intermittently, and a 'just clear it' return visit is virtually guaranteed within 1000-2000 mi.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 1997-2010 Saab 9-5 with the B205/B235 2.3L turbo is the most common P1611 platform — the DI cassette's intermittent failure mode (works fine at warm idle, drops a cylinder under boost or at cold start) is exactly the pattern that triggers P1611 after the active misfire code clears. 2003-2011 Saab 9-3 with the B207 2.0L turbo throws P1611 from individual COP coil intermittent failures, typically on cylinder 1 (closest to the firewall and the heat soak) or cylinder 4 (closest to the exhaust manifold collector). 1999-2003 Saab 9-3 (first generation, GM2900 platform) with the B205 throws P1611 from the same DI cassette pattern as the 9-5. 2005-2009 Saab 9-7X (5.3L Vortec V8) inherits GM code definitions and does not throw Saab-specific P1611. Estimated repair: $80 (single plug + diagnostic time) to $600 (OEM DI cassette + plugs on a 9-5, or full COP coil set + plugs on a 9-3).
