P1565
Manufacturer-Extended Powertrain Code (P1565)
See deep dive below for full diagnostic context.
Common symptoms
- CEL
Likely causes
- See deep dive
Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: see deep dive.
- Cost & scope. $50-$2,000
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.

P1565 on a Lexus/Toyota means the Cruise Control Main Switch has reported an invalid state to the cruise ECU — the cruise main switch is the on/off button on the cruise stalk (or on some platforms, a separate dash button) that arms the cruise system before the driver sets a speed, and the ECU monitors its state continuously. A healthy main switch reads 0V at the ECU input when OFF and 5V (or battery voltage, depending on circuit topology) when ON, with a clean transition; P1565 sets when the signal reads a third invalid state (floating mid-voltage 2-3V, or stuck at 5V with cruise commanded off, or both ON and OFF inputs asserted simultaneously on platforms with separate switch lines) for more than 2 seconds. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) operate the main switch on and off with a scan tool reading the cruise-main-switch PID; healthy switch shows clean ON/OFF state changes with no intermediate steps. A floating mid-state means dirty contacts inside the stalk — a $6 can of electrical contact cleaner sprayed into the stalk while cycling the switch fixes this on roughly 40% of older Toyota stalks. (2) Pull the stalk and ohm the main-switch contacts directly — should read open circuit (>1 MΩ) with switch OFF and closed (<5 ohms) with switch ON; resistance between 100Ω and 100kΩ means the contacts are pitted. (3) Inspect the harness from the stalk through the column connector to the cruise ECU for chafe — clockspring chafe in the steering column is the second most common P1565 cause behind dirty stalk contacts. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: don't replace the full cruise stalk assembly without first trying contact cleaner — a $5 clean fixes this code on a huge fraction of older Toyota and Lexus platforms, and a $200-$400 stalk swap is overkill unless cleaning has been attempted and failed.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 1995-2000 Lexus LS400 and 2001-2006 LS430 commonly throw P1565 from dirty main-switch contacts around 150K-200K mi; cleaning the stalk almost always closes the code on the first attempt. 1993-2005 Lexus GS300/GS400/GS430 share the stalk family and the same fix. 1999-2005 Lexus IS300 (2JZ-GE) and 2006-2013 IS250/IS350 (4GR-FSE, 2GR-FSE) throw P1565 with the same root cause but the newer stalks are slightly more robust and the failure timing shifts to 180K+ mi. 1997-2011 Toyota Camry across the 5S-FE, 2AZ-FE, 1MZ-FE, and 2GR-FE engine families uses a similar stalk architecture and throws P1565 from contact wear and from clockspring chafe in equal measure. Estimated repair: $5 to $350.
