P1498 on a Toyota Prius means the Inverter Cooling System Stuck — the hybrid ECU has commanded a change in inverter pump speed or flow state and the temperature response from the inverter coolant temp sensor doesn't match expected behavior, which the system interprets as a stuck pump (running continuously at max regardless of command) or a stuck-closed thermostat/valve in the inverter loop. The diagnostic threshold is typically: commanded pump-off (low-flow) state held for 60+ seconds with inverter coolant temp failing to rise above ambient by more than 10°F, OR commanded pump-on with no temp drop under inverter load. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) verify the pump is actually responsive to ECU commands — with a Techstream-compatible scan tool, command the inverter pump on/off and listen for the whine to change cadence; a pump that runs at a fixed speed regardless of command is electrically stuck. (2) Check inverter coolant flow at the reservoir — with the car in READY mode, you should see visible coolant turbulence/return-flow in the reservoir; no visible flow means the pump is dead or the loop has an air pocket from a recent coolant top-off (burping the loop per the Toyota repair manual procedure clears about 20% of P1498 sets after a service event). (3) Scan inverter coolant temp through a drive cycle: healthy operation shows temp climbing from 80°F at startup to 130-150°F under heavy hybrid load (highway acceleration) then dropping back to 100-120°F at cruise. Flat-line temp behavior under varying load means flow is stuck. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: P1498 and P1497 often set together when the inverter pump fails — replacing the pump alone closes both codes about 80% of the time on Gen 2 Prius, and there's no need to invoice the customer for two separate diagnoses.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2004-2009 Prius Gen 2 (1NZ-FXE) is again the top P1498 platform — same Aisin inverter pump failure pattern as P1497, often presenting as a stuck-on pump that's actually running but with no flow (impeller separated from shaft). 2010-2015 Prius Gen 3 (2ZR-FXE) throws P1498 more often from air pockets after coolant service than from pump failure; bleeding the inverter loop per the manual procedure (which involves the dedicated bleed port near the PCU) is the durable fix. 2012-2017 Prius v and Prius c share Gen 3 architecture. 2006-2008 Lexus RX400h and 2010-2015 RX450h hybrid V6 platforms throw P1498 from a related but distinct cooling-loop failure mode where the inverter coolant thermostat (if equipped on that variant) sticks closed.
