P1492 is a Subaru-specific code meaning the EGR solenoid valve control circuit reports a malfunction — the ECU is commanding the EGR vacuum-switching solenoid to open or close and either the current draw, the voltage feedback, or the resulting MAP/MAF response is outside expected ranges. Most EJ-series Subarus equipped with EGR (primarily 1999-2005 California-emissions and 2007-2014 federal Outbacks/Foresters) use a small electric solenoid that gates intake vacuum to a vacuum-actuated EGR valve; the solenoid itself is a simple coil with 30-80 ohms of winding resistance at room temp. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Visual: pop the hood and inspect the vacuum hoses to and from the EGR solenoid for cracks, kinks, or disconnections — old EJ engines bake the rubber lines stiff and they split at the fittings. A $4 length of vacuum hose fixes a non-trivial percentage of these codes. (2) Unplug the EGR solenoid connector and ohm the two pins: 30-80 ohms is the typical spec across EJ applications (verify in WSM). Open-circuit or short to ground means the solenoid is dead. (3) Back-probe the connector with the engine running and check for the 12V supply on the appropriate pin and a switched ground from the ECU when EGR is commanded (typically under light cruise, 1,800-3,200 rpm). No supply means upstream wiring/fuse; no switched ground means ECU driver fault. (4) Pull the EGR valve itself and look for carbon clogging the pintle — a stuck EGR valve makes the solenoid work harder and can throw P1492 secondarily. Don't replace the EGR solenoid before checking the vacuum lines — most P1492 codes on a 15+ year old Subaru are a $4 hose, not a $90 solenoid.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 1999-2005 Subaru Legacy/Outback/Forester EJ25 SOHC California-emissions models are the highest-volume P1492 platform — the vacuum lines to the EGR solenoid run across the top of the intake manifold and bake hard from underhood heat, splitting at the fittings around year 10-15. 2007-2014 Forester/Outback 2.5L N/A with federal EGR have a more durable hose routing but the solenoid itself clogs internally with intake carbon backing up through the EGR passage. 2003-2008 Subaru Baja and Impreza 2.5RS with California emissions throw P1492 commonly enough that there's a recurring forum thread on NASIOC documenting the vacuum-line fix. Estimated repair: $4 (vacuum hose DIY) to $250 (EGR solenoid + valve replacement at a shop).
