How a shop works this

Work from evidence to part, not the other way round. A code names a circuit or a symptom; it does not name the part that failed.

  1. Note every code that is set, not just this one.

    Codes that appear together usually narrow the cause faster than any one of them read alone.

  2. Read the freeze frame — the conditions the fault was recorded under.

    Cold or warm, idle or load, road speed and engine speed. A fault that only appears cold is a different fault from one that only appears under load, even with the same code on the scanner.

P1471 on VW/Audi is EVAP Emission Control Leak Detection Pump Circuit Short to Ground — the ECM detected that the LDP (leak detection pump) electrical circuit shorted to ground. The LDP is a vacuum/pressure pump mounted near the EVAP canister that pressurizes the fuel-vapor system and watches for a pressure drop indicating a leak; when its motor circuit shorts, P1471 sets.

Cheapest-first ladder

  1. locate the LDP (typically near the charcoal canister at the rear of the vehicle on sedans, or under the rear of the engine bay on some Audis), unplug it, and measure the motor coil resistance at the pump connector — typical spec is 2-5 ohms; a reading near zero confirms an internal short.
  2. Probe the connector for the 12V feed (KOEO) and the ECM ground-switch line — back-probe with a meter while running the EVAP test through VCDS to watch the ECM pull ground.
  3. Inspect the harness for rodent damage where it runs along the underbody — the LDP wiring is a frequent rodent target on cars parked outdoors.
  4. Check the pump's internal filter for blockage (a clogged filter increases motor load and can fault the driver).
  5. Don't replace the EVAP canister on a P1471 — the code is about the pump motor circuit, not the canister;
  6. LDPs run $120-$280 and the canister is a $400+ part that's almost never the cause.
