P1457 is a Toyota and Honda EVAP code for a leak detected specifically on the charcoal canister side of the evaporative emissions system (as opposed to P0442/P0455 which can be anywhere in the system, or P0441 which targets purge flow). The EVAP system pulls a vacuum on the canister and lines using the Vacuum Switching Valve or Canister Vent Valve and watches pressure decay over a calibrated interval; if pressure rises faster than the small-leak threshold (typically equivalent to a 0.020-inch or 0.040-inch hole depending on year), P1457 sets. Cheapest checks first: confirm the gas cap seals (replace if the O-ring is hardened, about $15), then visually inspect the canister-side rubber lines and quick-connects for cracks where they pass through the rear subframe or near the fuel tank. Use a smoke machine at 0.5 psi maximum injected through the service port and watch for smoke at the canister, vent valve, leak detection pump, or fuel filler neck. Live data: monitor the EVAP pressure sensor (Toyota VPMP) during a forced bi-directional canister leak test; healthy systems pull and hold at least -8 inH2O for 30 seconds. The expensive misdiagnosis is replacing the entire canister assembly ($300 to $600) when the leak is actually a $20 vent valve seal or a cracked $30 rubber elbow at the top of the canister.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: Toyota 2AZ-FE Camry, RAV4, and Solara (2002-2009) frequently sets P1457 from a failed canister vent valve that sticks open after road salt exposure to the rear underbody. Toyota Prius (2004-2015 NHW20/ZVW30) is notorious for P1457 from a cracked plastic vapor line elbow at the canister, often triggered by rodent damage. Toyota Sienna (2004-2010) sees P1457 from the canister assembly itself splitting along the molded seam where it mounts above the spare tire well. Honda Civic and CR-V (older OBD-II era through mid-2000s) used P1457 for canister-side leaks where the canister-to-purge line cracks at the rear of the engine bay. Estimated repair: $25 to $650.
