P1394 is GM's Ignition Coil 'A' Circuit Primary fault on the LS1/LS6 and early Vortec platforms — the PCM monitors the primary control circuit on a specific bank's coils (the LS series uses 'A' for one cylinder group and 'B' for the other depending on engine year and FSM convention) and flags an open, short, or excessive resistance on the primary side. Coil primary resistance on LSx coils measures 0.4-1.4 ohms cold; the secondary spec is 5,000-7,000 ohms cold on most OEM and quality aftermarket units. P1394 differs from P1361 in that P1394 is a circuit fault on a specific bank's coil control group rather than an individual cylinder's coil — meaning the failure is often shared wiring, a common 12V feed, or a ground point that serves multiple coils. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Identify which bank the 'A' code refers to in your model-year FSM (it's not consistent across years). (2) Visually inspect the coil-pack rail and harness on that bank — look for melted insulation, oil contamination from a leaking valve cover gasket (very common LS pattern), or a chafed wire at the valve cover edge. (3) Measure 12V supply at each coil on the affected bank with key-on — a missing supply on one or more coils points at a shared feed wire or fuse. (4) Check the coil-pack ground at the valve cover bolt (LS coils ground through their mounting bracket) — corroded threads on the ground bolt throw P1394. (5) Measure primary resistance on each coil on the affected bank and replace any that are out of spec ($30-$80 each, $200-$400 for a full set of 8 OEM). Don't replace the coil pack rail before checking the valve cover gasket — on LS engines the #1 cause of P1394 is a leaking valve cover gasket dripping oil onto the coil boots and ground points, and the oil bridges the primary circuit to ground intermittently; a $25 gasket set fixes it.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 1999-2007 Silverado / Tahoe / Sierra / Yukon / Suburban with the LS-based 4.8/5.3/6.0 Vortec (LM7, LR4, LQ4, LY5) is the dominant P1394 platform — the truck valve cover gaskets harden and leak at the rear corners by 100-150k miles and drip oil onto the coil rail. 1999-2002 Camaro / Firebird / Corvette with the LS1/LS6 and 2004 Pontiac GTO with the LS1 — same valve cover oil-soak pattern, plus the harness routing on the F-bodies puts the coil-control wires close to the exhaust manifold heat shield and the insulation can chafe through. 2003-2006 Cadillac CTS-V and 2004-2007 Pontiac GTO/Chevy SSR with the LS2/LS6 share the same coil architecture and failure modes. Some early Vortec 4.3L V6 trucks pre-LS-architecture have a similar code in the P139X range tied to the older ignition module circuit. Estimated repair: $40 (single LS coil + dielectric grease + ground bolt clean-up) to $750 (full coil rail replacement + valve cover gasket set + harness repair on a high-mileage Silverado).
