P1356 on a BMW is a Misfire During Start with Catalyst Damage warning — it's a sibling to P0301-P0306 but specifically flagged during the cold-start window and tagged with the catalyst-damage severity bit, meaning the DME counted enough cold-start misfire events to exceed the threshold that protects the catalytic converter from unburned-fuel washout. The DME tracks per-cylinder misfire counters in two windows: a short window (200 revs) for emissions-relevant misfire and a longer window (1000 revs) for cat-damaging misfire. P1356 sets when accumulated misfire counts during the first 30-60 seconds after cold start exceed ~50-200 events per 1000 revs on one or more cylinders, with the catalyst-damage flag asserted because the cold catalyst can't oxidize the dumped fuel and the converter substrate suffers thermal/chemical attack. Diagnostic order: (1) Scan misfire counters per cylinder with INPA/ISTA — identify which cylinders are accumulating cold-start misfire (often cylinders 1-3 on N52/N54 because of the front-of-engine oil pooling pattern). (2) Read the cam-to-crank correlation under cranking — on N52/N54 at 100K+ mi, a stretched timing chain retards cam timing enough that cold-start spark events miss the optimal window, and the engine misfires for the first 5-15 seconds until the VANOS catches up. Healthy cam-crank correlation should be within ±5° crank during cranking; >8° retard is a stretched chain. (3) Pull the valve cover and inspect the timing chain at the upper guide — a chain with visible slack between the guide and the tensioner side, or a worn guide showing the chain has been rubbing the plastic to a wear groove, is the smoking gun. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: don't replace coils, plugs, and injectors on an N52/N54 throwing P1356 with cold-start misfire before you verify cam timing under cranking — the classic 100K-mile pattern is a stretched timing chain causing cold-start misfire that mimics ignition failure, and parts-cannon spark and fuel components on these engines is a $400-800 detour that doesn't fix the actual fault. The real repair is a full timing chain service ($2,500-4,500 on an N52/N54) before the chain skips a tooth and bends valves.

The N51 SULEV variant (2008+ Northeast emissions states) shares the same chain architecture and the same failure pattern. 2012-2018 BMW N20 2.0L turbo (F30 328i, F22 228i, F32 428i) throws P1356 from the well-documented chain GUIDE failure (plastic guides shed debris) more than chain stretch itself — the symptom is the same cold-start misfire but the repair path differs (guides plus tensioner plus chain) and the urgency is higher because the N20 will grenade if ignored. 2009-2019 BMW N63 4.4L twin-turbo V8 (F10 550i, F15 X5 50i) throws P1356 from valve-stem-seal failure causing cold-start oil-burn fouling on the bank 2 cylinders that sit lower in the V; BMW's CCP covers stem-seal replacement on affected VINs. 2010-2016 N55 3.0L single-turbo (F30 335i, F22 M235i) shares the N54 chain weakness in earlier production years. Estimated repair: $600 (single coil/plug swap on a non-chain cause) to $6,500 (full N54 timing chain, guides, oil-pump-nut update, and any required valve work if the chain has already started skipping).
