OBD-II Code
P1270
Severity
Not yet reviewed
Nobody on our side has assessed this code yet, so we are not going to guess at how serious it is.
Can you drive it
We cannot say
Treat it as unknown until a shop reads it with live data. If the check-engine light is FLASHING, stop driving as soon as it is safe to — that means an active misfire, whatever the code.
Indicative cost (USD)
$0–$400
From this code's diagnostic notes. Varies by vehicle, diagnosis, parts, and local labor. This is not a repair quote.
$0 (clear code, no fault) to $400 (CKP or VSS sensor replacement if the limiter is triggering falsely).
P1270 is a Ford-specific code meaning the PCM commanded the engine rpm limiter or vehicle speed limiter to its preset ceiling and held it there — this is not strictly a fault code so much as a flag that something exceeded a programmed governor.
How a shop works this
Work from evidence to part, not the other way round. A code names a circuit or a symptom; it does not name the part that failed.
Note every code that is set, not just this one.
Codes that appear together usually narrow the cause faster than any one of them read alone.
Read the freeze frame — the conditions the fault was recorded under.
Cold or warm, idle or load, road speed and engine speed. A fault that only appears cold is a different fault from one that only appears under load, even with the same code on the scanner.
Confirm the fault is current rather than history.
Clear the code and see whether it returns under those same conditions. A code that does not come back may have been logged during a repair, a flat battery, or a bad connection that has since been disturbed.
Then follow the diagnostic notes further down this page, in the order they are written.
They are written in the order a shop works this code, cheapest checks first. Where they name a component, inspect its wiring and connector before replacing it.
If the code comes back after a repair, the underlying fault is still there. That is the point to bring in a scanner with live data and freeze-frame, or a shop that has one.

P1270 is a Ford-specific code meaning the PCM commanded the engine rpm limiter or vehicle speed limiter to its preset ceiling and held it there — this is not strictly a fault code so much as a flag that something exceeded a programmed governor. Engine rpm limiter on a Ford typically sits between 6200 and 7200 rpm depending on engine (4.6L 2V cuts around 5800 rpm, 4.6L 3V around 6500 rpm, 5.0L Coyote around 7000 rpm in Mustang GT, 3.5L EcoBoost around 6500 rpm); vehicle speed limiter is governed by the tire-size code burned into the PCM (98-105 mph on H-rated all-season trucks, 130+ on V-rated Mustang/Police Interceptor).
Cheapest-first ladder
- Read freeze-frame data — if rpm at code-set was 6200-7200 and throttle was at 100%, this was a hard rev-limiter hit (manual mis-shift, neutral drop, dyno pull) and the code is informational; clear it and educate the driver.
- If freeze-frame shows vehicle speed at exactly the rated limiter (105 / 112 / 130 mph) the limiter governed correctly, no hardware fault.
- If freeze-frame shows the rpm or speed limiter triggering at unreasonably low values (5500 rpm, 80 mph), the PCM is misreading VSS or CKP — check the vehicle speed sensor circuit and the crank sensor signal on a scope before assuming PCM failure. Don't reflash the PCM or replace the speed sensor before reading keep-alive memory for an unauthorized-tune flag — many SCT/Bully Dog/Livernois tunes raise rpm and speed limiters, and if the tune was poorly applied or only partially flashed, the PCM can set P1270 every time the driver hits the now-mismatched OEM limiter. The Saleen, Roush, and Shelby supercharged Fords have factory-revised limiters that read differently from base-tune PCMs.

- 1996-2014Ford Mustang GT / Cobra / Shelby is the most common P1270 customer — owners doing rev-match downshifts, neutral drops at car shows, or dyno pulls hit the rev-limiter and the customer brings it in worried; ~90% of Mustang P1270 tickets are informational, not hardware.
- 2004-2014Ford F-150 / Expedition with the 5.4L 3V Triton sees P1270 from speed-limiter hits at the 99-mph governor on H-rated all-season tires; the code is also informational but a flag that the truck is being driven hard.
- 2011-2017Crown Vic Police Interceptor and the newer Police Interceptor Sedan/Utility (Taurus / Explorer based) sees P1270 in actual fleet service when officers exceed pursuit-mode speed limiters during high-speed runs — these are documented in fleet maintenance logs and don't require repair.
- 2015-2020Mustang EcoBoost 2.3L throws P1270 from rpm-limiter abuse on the auto-cross / drag-strip crowd.
