P1259 is a Honda-specific code meaning the PCM detected an open or short in the VTEC Solenoid Valve circuit or saw an implausible state from the VTEC Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC-PSW). Honda's VTEC system uses an ECU-commanded spool solenoid to route oil pressure to the rocker-arm shift pin at a calibration-defined RPM (typically 3500-5800 rpm depending on engine family); the oil-pressure switch confirms the solenoid actually delivered pressure to the rocker. P1259 sets when the ECU commands ON but the PSW doesn't go to ground within the timeout window (or vice versa). Cheapest-first shop ladder: (1) Check oil level and condition before touching the harness — overdue 5W-30 or 5W-20 that's thinned to honey by 8,000 miles will not build the 50+ psi needed at 3500 rpm to flip the PSW ($0, 2 min, catches roughly 40% of P1259 calls). (2) Backprobe the VTEC PSW signal wire with KOER and bring the engine to ~3500 rpm — you should see battery voltage drop from ~12V (switch open, no oil pressure to rocker) to near 0V (switch closed, pressure present); no transition with good oil = stuck PSW, dead solenoid, or clogged screen. (3) Pull the VTEC solenoid (two bolts on the cylinder-head face), inspect the screen filter on the back for sludge and varnish — Honda's screen is the #1 P1259 cause and a 5-minute clean with brake-kleen brings it back. (4) Ohm the solenoid coil — Honda spec is 14-30 ohms at 68 F depending on year/engine; out-of-range means replace ($70-140 part). Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: don't replace the VTEC solenoid before changing the oil and cleaning the screen — chronically-low oil pressure from a sludged screen or wrong viscosity will set P1259 codes that vanish after a fresh service, and shops have replaced $250 solenoid assemblies only to have the code return in 500 miles because the actual problem was a 12,000-mile-old oil change.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2001-2005 Honda Civic 1.7L (D17A) is the highest-volume P1259 ticket in Honda shops — the solenoid screen sludges aggressively past 80k miles on owners who stretched 7,500-mile intervals on conventional oil; clean the screen first, replace the solenoid only if cleaning doesn't fix it. 2006-2011 Honda Civic Si 2.0L K20Z3 throws P1259 alongside the VTC actuator rattle (cold-start clack) when oil pressure drops at the cam — same fix path but check the VTC actuator if rattle is present. 2003-2007 Honda Accord 2.4L K24A and CR-V K24A1 throw P1259 from sludged screens; the K-series solenoid is on the back of the head and adds 15-20 min labor. 2008-2014 Honda Odyssey/Pilot J35 V6 (VCM models) and Acura RDX K23A1, TSX K24A2, MDX J37 share the same screen-and-solenoid failure path — J-series VCM trucks are especially prone because the VCM oil galleries demand higher minimum pressure and react worse to overdue oil.
