OBD-II Code
P1235
Severity
Not yet reviewed
Nobody on our side has assessed this code yet, so we are not going to guess at how serious it is.
Can you drive it
We cannot say
Treat it as unknown until a shop reads it with live data. If the check-engine light is FLASHING, stop driving as soon as it is safe to — that means an active misfire, whatever the code.
Indicative cost (USD)
$90–$750
From this code's diagnostic notes. Varies by vehicle, diagnosis, parts, and local labor. This is not a repair quote.
$90 (clean and re-pin FPDM connector) to $750 (FPDM + relocation kit + new pump assembly installed).
P1235 is a Ford-specific fuel-pump-control code meaning the Fuel Pump Driver Module (FPDM) — the PWM controller that lives on the frame rail behind the rear axle on most 1998+ Ford trucks and 2002+ Ford cars — is reporting that the commanded fuel-pump duty cycle and the actual pump current draw are out of range with each other.
How a shop works this
Work from evidence to part, not the other way round. A code names a circuit or a symptom; it does not name the part that failed.
Note every code that is set, not just this one.
Codes that appear together usually narrow the cause faster than any one of them read alone.
Read the freeze frame — the conditions the fault was recorded under.
Cold or warm, idle or load, road speed and engine speed. A fault that only appears cold is a different fault from one that only appears under load, even with the same code on the scanner.
Confirm the fault is current rather than history.
Clear the code and see whether it returns under those same conditions. A code that does not come back may have been logged during a repair, a flat battery, or a bad connection that has since been disturbed.
Then follow the diagnostic notes further down this page, in the order they are written.
They are written in the order a shop works this code, cheapest checks first. Where they name a component, inspect its wiring and connector before replacing it.
If the code comes back after a repair, the underlying fault is still there. That is the point to bring in a scanner with live data and freeze-frame, or a shop that has one.

The PCM sends a low-current PWM duty-cycle command to the FPDM, the FPDM drives the pump at variable voltage, and a feedback wire (FP Monitor) reports actual pump operation back to the PCM; when the loop diverges by more than spec, P1235 sets.
Cheapest-first ladder
- Pull the FPDM connector (usually a 6-pin gray weatherpack on the driver-side frame rail) and inspect for water intrusion and green corrosion — 70% of P1235 codes in the rust belt are a corroded FPDM connector, not a failed module or pump; clean, dielectric grease, re-pin.
- Back-probe the FP Monitor return line at the PCM with a scope while cranking — should see a clean square wave at 12-50 Hz; flat line or noise means broken Monitor circuit.
- If both circuits are clean, command the pump on with a scan tool and watch fuel pressure — under 55 psi on a port-injection Ford means a tired pump pulling outside its allowable current envelope. Don't replace the FPDM, the pump, or the PCM before checking KAM for a prior FPDM relocation kit or an unauthorized tune — Ford issued a TSB to relocate the FPDM up off the frame rail on certain F-150 / Expedition / Explorer years, and aftermarket fuel-system upgrades (DSS, Aeromotive) often disable the FPDM feedback monitoring entirely.

- 1999-2010Ford F-150 / Expedition / Crown Vic is the absolute king of P1235 — the FPDM is bolted to the inside of the driver-side frame rail directly behind the rear tire, gets sandblasted by road salt for a decade, and the 6-pin connector corrodes from the inside; Ford TSB covers relocating the module to the bed/trunk area on affected VINs.
- 2005-2012Ford Escape / Mariner / Tribute throws P1235 from the same FPDM corrosion pattern under the rear bumper.
- 2011-2014Ford F-150 EcoBoost 3.5L throws P1235 from intermittent FP Monitor circuit chafe where the harness passes over the rear crossmember.
- 2003-2007Lincoln Town Car / Mercury Grand Marquis (Panther platform) commonly throws P1235 in fleet/police use from the FPDM dying outright around 150k miles.
Estimated repair$90 (clean and re-pin FPDM connector) to $750 (FPDM + relocation kit + new pump assembly installed).
