P1190 on Mazda is the engine-stall code triggered when fuel rail pressure falls below the minimum required to maintain combustion at idle — the ECU sees a stall event correlated with insufficient fuel pressure and sets P1190 to point at the fuel delivery system rather than at a misfire or ignition fault. On Skyactiv-G direct-injection engines (2.0L and 2.5L), the high-pressure fuel rail normally runs 5,000-30,000 psi (commanded by the ECU based on load) and the low-pressure lift pump supplies 50-65 psi to the HPFP inlet; either side falling out of spec causes the stall. On older PFI Mazdas (pre-Skyactiv 2.0L MZR, 2.3L Duratec), rail pressure is a straightforward 30-65 psi from the in-tank pump. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Read freeze-frame data when the code set — fuel rail pressure at the moment of stall is the critical data point. On Skyactiv-G, anything below 4,000 psi at idle is HPFP or low-side supply problem; below 25 psi on PFI is in-tank pump or filter. (2) Live-data scan at warm idle: rail pressure should be stable within +/- 200 psi on Skyactiv-G and +/- 3 psi on PFI. Pulsing or sagging pressure points at a weak HPFP, a worn lift pump, or a leaking injector bleeding the rail down. (3) Check the in-tank lift pump current draw with an amp clamp — Skyactiv-G lift pumps spec around 4-7 amps at idle; high amp draw indicates internal pump wear. (4) Inspect the fuel filter (some Skyactiv use a lifetime in-tank filter; PFI engines have a replaceable inline filter). (5) Most expensive: HPFP replacement ($600-$1,200 part) or full in-tank pump assembly ($400-$700). Don't replace the HPFP before verifying low-side supply pressure — a weak in-tank lift pump starves the HPFP inlet and mimics HPFP failure for $400 less if caught.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2014-2018 Mazda CX-5 and 2014-2017 Mazda3/6 Skyactiv-G 2.0L and 2.5L are the volume P1190 platforms — the in-tank fuel pump assembly is a known weak point and Mazda issued multiple service updates on pump strainer redesigns; check VIN coverage at the dealer before quoting. 2014+ Mazda3 Skyactiv-G 2.5L sees P1190 most often after long highway runs where the in-tank pump heats up and loses output, then stalls on deceleration into a parking lot. 2016+ MX-5 Miata ND with Skyactiv-G 2.0L throws P1190 from a known HPFP cam-follower wear issue similar in pattern (but not identical mechanism) to the BMW N54/N20 HPFP follower failures — inspect the cam follower at the back of the head when the HPFP is removed. 2007-2013 Mazdaspeed3 and Mazdaspeed6 with the 2.3L DISI turbo throw P1190 from the well-documented HPFP internal lobe wear on the intake cam that drives the high-pressure pump — Cobb and Corksport sell the upgraded cam and pump combo as a known fix. Estimated repair: $400 (in-tank pump assembly DIY on Skyactiv) to $1,600 (HPFP + cam follower + labor on Mazdaspeed).
