P1133 indicates that Bank 1 Sensor 1 is switching too slowly between rich and lean — the O2 sensor is alive but lazy, transitioning at fewer than the spec 0.5 to 1.0 cycles per second at 2,500 rpm steady cruise (a healthy upstream zirconia sensor switches between 0.1V and 0.9V in under 100 milliseconds). It is the classic aging-O2 code on Ford Modular engines and shows up between 80,000 and 130,000 miles like clockwork. Cheapest-first ladder: graph upstream O2 voltage Bank 1 in live data at 2,500 rpm — a fresh sensor sweeps the full 0.1V to 0.9V range eight to ten times in ten seconds; a tired one stays stuck between 0.4V and 0.7V or sweeps only three to four times. Before condemning the sensor, verify the sensor is not contaminated by silicone (white powder on the tip = RTV outgassed, common after intake gasket jobs), oil (black wet), or coolant (green crystalline = head gasket — pressure-test cooling system before replacing the sensor). Replacement OEM Motorcraft upstream runs $90 to $160; Denso/NTK equivalents run $40 to $80. The expensive misdiagnosis is replacing the catalytic converter for a slow-switching upstream — the cat monitor uses the downstream sensor.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2001-2004 Ford Mustang GT 4.6L 2V and 1999-2004 F-150 5.4L 2V both run Motorcraft DY-1071 upstream sensors that age into P1133 between 90,000 and 120,000 miles — bank-replace upstream pairs even if only one codes. 2005-2010 Ford Explorer/Mountaineer 4.0L SOHC sees P1133 when the upstream sensor on the passenger header gets cooked by an exhaust manifold crack. 2008-2012 Ford Escape/Fusion 2.5L Duratec suffers slow-switching from carbon loading on the sensor tip. 2011-2014 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost runs wide-band upstream sensors (not zirconia) and rarely sets P1133 — if it does, suspect harness chafe at the turbo heat shield.
