P1102 is a Ford-specific code that means the upstream O2 sensor heater circuit on bank 1 sensor 1 is showing a short to ground or to voltage — the PCM watches heater current draw during warm-up and sees it pinned outside the normal 0.5-2.0 A window at 12 V system voltage and flags the circuit. Cheapest-first diagnostic on a shop floor: (1) Back-probe the heater control wire at the HO2S connector with a scan tool reading heater duty cycle and a clamp meter on the wire — anything under 0.3 A or over 2.5 A with KOEO and the heater commanded on means you've found the fault side. (2) Ohm the heater element across the two heater pins with the connector unplugged; spec on most Ford NTK/Bosch HO2S is 2-8 ohms cold, anything reading <1 ohm is an internally shorted sensor element. (3) Inspect the harness where it routes past the exhaust manifold and downpipe — 95% of P1102 codes on 100k+ mile Fords are melted insulation from a sagging heat shield or a re-routed harness after a previous exhaust job, not a bad sensor. Don't reflash the PCM or replace the HO2S before checking the keep-alive memory for an unauthorized-tune flag — a Saleen, Roush, or Livernois tune that disabled the rear O2 monitor can leave the front heater diagnostic acting weird, and a fresh OEM HO2S won't fix a software-side disable.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2004-2010 Ford F-150 / Expedition / Navigator with the 5.4L 3V Triton throws P1102 (and P1130/P1131 cousins) from the right-bank HO2S harness running directly across the top of the exhaust manifold heat shield — the shield bolts back out, the harness sags onto the manifold, and the heater wire insulation melts in 6-12 months; the fix is a new sensor PLUS the heat-shield bracket, not just the sensor. 2011-2016 Ford F-150 EcoBoost 3.5L commonly throws P1102 from condensation in the upstream HO2S connector after winter pressure-washes — pop the connector, drain it, dielectric grease, and clear the code before condemning the sensor. 2008-2014 Ford Focus / Escape 2.0L throws P1102 from a known short between the HO2S heater wire and the catalyst heat shield where the harness routes underneath. Estimated repair: $80 (harness repair + dielectric grease) to $450 (OEM HO2S + heat shield bracket installed).
