P1101 is GM's MAF Sensor Performance / Out-of-Self-Test-Range code — the ECM ran its rationality check against the MAF sensor and the airflow signal didn't track with TPS, RPM, and MAP the way it should. The ECM expects to see MAF frequency in the 2,500-7,000 Hz band on the digital-output sensors (LS-series and later Vortec) and g/s readings of roughly 4-8 g/s at warm idle climbing to 25-40 g/s at part-throttle cruise on the 5.3L V8s. When that signal drifts outside the model — usually reading too LOW for the commanded throttle position — the ECM sets P1101 and frequently pairs it with P0101. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Visually inspect the entire intake tract from the air filter box to the throttle body for a torn, collapsed, or disconnected intake snorkel/duct — this is the #1 cause and costs $0 to find. (2) Pull the MAF and check for a fingerprint, oil film, or aftermarket-K&N residue on the hot-wire element; clean it with CRC MAF-specific spray ($12 can). (3) Check for unmetered air downstream of the MAF: cracked PCV hose, blown intake-manifold gasket, loose oil filler cap on a sealed crankcase. (4) Scan live MAF g/s at idle and compare to a known-good vehicle of the same engine — if it's reading 1.5-2 g/s at idle on a 5.3L (should be 4-6), the sensor is dying. Don't replace the MAF before checking for a torn intake snorkel/duct — the most common GM Vortec P1101/P0101 root cause is a 4-inch tear in the rubber air intake duct between the airbox and the throttle body, and a $190 MAF won't fix it.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2007-2014 Chevy Silverado / Tahoe / Suburban / GMC Sierra / Yukon with the 5.3L Vortec (LMG, LC9, LY5) is the most common P1101 ticket — the airbox-to-throttle-body intake duct cracks at the accordion bend or pulls loose at the throttle-body clamp, creating an unmetered-air leak that throws P1101 cold and clears once the engine warms and the rubber softens. 2010-2017 Equinox / Terrain / Malibu with the 2.4L Ecotec (LAF/LEA/LUK) throws P1101 from a failed PCV diaphragm in the cam cover dumping crankcase vapor into the intake unmetered — GM superseded the cover assembly multiple times. 2010+ Camaro / CTS / Traverse with the LFX/LLT 3.6L V6 throws P1101 when carbon buildup on the direct-injection intake valves restricts airflow enough to skew the MAF rationality model. 2006-2010 Silverado/Sierra HD with the 6.6L LBZ/LMM Duramax can throw an MAF performance code from a clogged or oil-soaked air filter restricting airflow under load. Estimated repair: $0 (reseating a popped-loose intake duct) to $450 (MAF sensor + new intake duct + PCV).
