P1100 is Ford's manufacturer-extended code for an intermittent Mass Air Flow sensor signal — the PCM saw the MAF signal drop out of its expected range momentarily, recovered, and logged the event rather than the hard-failure P0101/P0102/P0103. Because it is intermittent, the code often sets without a drivability symptom present at scan time, which is exactly why it gets misdiagnosed. Cheapest-first ladder: pull the air filter and inspect the MAF hot-wire element for oil film, cobwebs, or debris (oiled K&N filters are the number-one cause); clean with CRC MAF-specific cleaner only — never carb cleaner. Then key-on engine-off, back-probe the MAF signal wire and confirm 0.2V to 0.5V at rest; start the engine and watch MAF grams/second at idle — a healthy 4.6L Triton should read 4 to 7 g/s at warm idle, a 5.4L should read 6 to 9 g/s, and a 3.5L EcoBoost should read 5 to 8 g/s. Wiggle-test the harness at the MAF connector and along the loom to the PCM with the engine idling — a momentary stumble nails an intermittent connector. The expensive misdiagnosis is replacing the $180 to $320 MAF sensor when the actual fault is a torn intake boot downstream allowing unmetered air, or a corroded PCM pin C175 on Modular V8s.
