P1080 on a BMW is a Component Voltage Supply fault on the Air Mass Sensor (MAF) Heater circuit — the hot-wire MAF on most BMW gasoline engines (N20, N52, N54, N55, S55, N63) uses a small heating element that maintains the sensor wire at a fixed temperature above ambient, and the ECU measures the current required to hold that temperature as the proxy for airflow. The heater circuit has its own dedicated voltage supply (typically a fused 12V feed from the engine electronics ECU module or a smart-power output from the DME), and P1080 sets when that supply rail reads below ~10.5V or above ~16V at the sensor, or when the supply line is open. Healthy MAF heater current draw is 0.3-1.2A at warm idle climbing to 0.5-1.5A at WOT; if the supply rail is sagging, the heater can't hold temp, the airflow reading goes garbage, and you'll see secondary fuel-trim and idle-quality complaints. Diagnostic order: (1) Backprobe the MAF connector with the engine running and measure supply voltage on the heater pin (consult the wiring diagram — pin assignments differ across N20/N54/N63) — should be 13.5-14.4V; below 12V points to a wiring/connector fault, above 15.5V points to a charging system overvoltage. (2) Ohm the MAF heater element when cold (typical 2-8 ohms across the heater terminals; open means the element is burned out). (3) Inspect the harness between the DME and the MAF for chafing — the loom routes near the valve cover on N52/N54 and can chafe through against the head over time. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: don't replace the MAF before verifying the supply voltage is actually present at the connector — on N54 cars, a corroded ground at the engine block (BMW's notorious eyelet ground point near the alternator) drops the MAF heater supply enough to throw P1080 even with a perfectly good $180-280 sensor, and cleaning the ground stud with a wire wheel for free fixes the code permanently.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2012-2018 BMW N20 2.0L turbo (F30 328i, F22 228i, F32 428i, F25 X3 xDrive28i, F26 X4 xDrive28i) sees P1080 mostly from harness chafe at the valve cover heat — when the harness wears through against the head, the heater circuit shorts intermittently and the code comes and goes. 2007-2013 BMW N52 3.0L NA inline-6 (E90 328i, E60 528i, E83 X3, E70 X5 30i) throws P1080 from the same engine ground stud corrosion that causes a dozen other phantom codes — checking the ground before parts-canon is the move. 2007-2013 BMW N54 3.0L twin-turbo (E90/E92 335i, E60 535i, E89 Z4 35is) throws P1080 occasionally but more often suffers from broader MAF reliability issues that get masked by HPFP and injector codes. 2009-2019 BMW N63 4.4L twin-turbo V8 (F10 550i, F12 650i, F15 X5 50i) uses dual MAFs (one per intake tract) and throws P1080 most often when one bank's heater fuse blows from a stuck-on heater drawing >2A. Estimated repair: $25 (clean engine ground stud) to $450 (single MAF sensor plus harness repair on an N20).
