P0AF7 mirrors P0AF3 but on the "D" circuit — a second voltage-sense input group on packs that use multiple sense-circuit IDs (typically packs with more than ~14 module groups, where the BMS uses separate sense buses for each half of the pack). The diagnostic flow is identical: scan-tool the per-module voltages, identify the group that drifts away from its neighbors, inspect the BMS sense harness for chafing at bus-bar bolts and bulkhead connectors. Per-cell Li-ion sits 3.6-4.2V; NiMH per-stick sits 7.2V nominal. The key difference with P0AF7 vs P0AF3 is that the "D" circuit typically corresponds to the second half of the pack physically — on a Prius Gen2/Gen3, that's the rear half of the battery tray closer to the rear seat; on a Volt Gen1 LBC, that's the T-pack section running under the center console; on a Bolt EV, that's one of the lower module rows. Pack-level voltage 200-650V scaled. DO NOT probe HV orange-wire circuits with a standard multimeter. Always service HV with Class 0 1000V gloves, isolation tester (Megger), and DC-rated lugged probes. Voltage-sense codes (P0AF3-P0AF7) often indicate the BMS sense lead chafed at the bus-bar bolt — re-tightening with new lockwasher can fix without pack replacement.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2004-2009 Toyota Prius Gen2 throws P0AF7 alongside P0AF3 when both halves of the pack have hit the same age-related sense-harness wear — fretting at bus-bar bolts is symmetric across the pack so when one circuit shows it, the other usually does within 10-20K mi. A full BMS sense-harness refresh on both circuits is the playbook. 2010-2015 Prius Gen3 follows the same pattern. 2011-2015 Chevy Volt Gen1 throws P0AF7 from the second LBC sense bus running through the T-pack center section — accessing it requires partial pack disassembly. 2017-2019 Bolt EV throws P0AF7 from the LG pack's lower module rows. 2014-2020 BMW i3 throws P0AF7 from the rear pack section of the 22kWh/33kWh/42kWh battery on the SME (Speicher Management Elektronik) controller — BMW's pattern is similar fretting at the module bus-bars. Estimated repair: $250 (sense-harness re-terminate on both circuits) to $5,500 (module-group replacement) to $16,000+ (full pack).
