P0A14 is set when the active engine mount control system (used on the Prius and a small number of other hybrids to actively damp engine-on/engine-off transitions that would otherwise be felt as a lurch in the cabin) does not deliver the commanded actuator response. Active engine mounts use either a hydraulic chamber with an electronic solenoid or a magnetorheological fluid with an electromagnet to vary mount stiffness in real time; the ECU commands a stiffness profile during HSD engine starts/stops to mask the NVH event. Cheapest-first ladder: visually inspect the mount itself for leaking hydraulic fluid (a leaking active mount is the dominant failure mode and is visually obvious from a wet mount body and fluid streaks down to the subframe); scan-tool the commanded actuator duty and the feedback hydraulic pressure (typical healthy active mount shows pressure feedback tracking command within 10-15% across the operating range, with peak pressures of 30-80 psi during engine-stop events); ohm the actuator solenoid (typical reading 5-15 ohms; open or shorted means coil failure). The expensive misdiagnosis is replacing the powertrain control module when the real fault is a $400 active mount that has bled out its fluid. DO NOT probe HV orange-wire circuits with a standard multimeter. Always service HV with Class 0 1000V gloves, isolation tester (Megger), and DC-rated lugged probes; the HV interlock loop drops pack contactors at service-plug removal and must never be bypassed.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2010-2015 Toyota Prius Gen 3 (ZVW30) is the most common P0A14 vehicle; the active front engine mount fails most often around 80-120k miles from hydraulic fluid leakage and is a $350-500 part with a 2-3 hour replacement labor. 2012-2015 Prius Plug-In shares the active mount with Gen 3 and the same failure pattern. 2007-2017 Camry Hybrid throws P0A14 from active mount fluid loss; the part number differs from Prius but the diagnosis is identical. 2011-2017 Highlander Hybrid uses a similar active mount on the front bank and throws the code with the same root cause. 2004-2009 Prius Gen 2 uses a simpler passive mount and does NOT throw P0A14; this is a Gen 3 era code on Toyota platforms. Estimated repair: $400 to $900.
