P0A0D is the more specific variant of P0A0A: the HV interlock circuit is reading low (typically resistance well above the closed-loop expected range, or in some platforms an actual voltage feedback signal that has dropped below the threshold the HV ECU expects when all connectors are seated). The diagnostic ladder is the same as P0A0A but with one critical addition: scan-tool the HVIL feedback voltage (Toyota HSD typically expects 4.5-5.0V across the loop in normal operation; Volt expects a discrete signal at 5.0V nominal; Leaf uses a slightly different reference). A reading near 0V means the loop is shorted to ground somewhere (rare but happens when a chafed orange-conduit jacket exposes an HVIL signal wire to chassis), while a mid-scale reading (1.0-3.5V) typically points to corroded pins or a partially seated connector that is still making contact but at higher resistance. Walk every accessible HV connector and inverter cover before pulling the service plug; once the plug is pulled, wait the platform-specific bleed time (Toyota 5 minutes, Tesla 2 minutes minimum after pack contactor drop) before touching anything orange. DO NOT probe HV orange-wire circuits with a standard multimeter; use a CAT III 1000V rated meter with DC-isolated lugged probes if you must read pack voltage during diagnosis. Always service HV with Class 0 1000V gloves, isolation tester (Megger), and DC-rated lugged probes. The HV interlock loop exists specifically to drop pack contactors when the service plug is removed; bypass at lethal risk.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2004-2009 Prius Gen 2 throws P0A0D most often after a tech reseats the service plug but the HVIL micro-switch in the plug body is worn and reads marginal; replacing the service-plug assembly resolves it. 2010-2015 Prius Gen 3 and 2007-2017 Camry/Highlander Hybrid share the same plug-switch failure mode. 2011-2019 GM Volt Gen 1/Gen 2 throws P0A0D from chafed underbody HVIL signal wire where the orange conduit crosses the rear suspension; GM has a service info document covering wire-loom rerouting. 2011-2017 Nissan Leaf Gen 1 throws the code from corrosion in the front motor-bay HVIL ground termination on road-salt vehicles. 2003-2015 Honda Civic Hybrid (IMA) throws the code from the IPU door switch losing continuity with age. Estimated repair: $50 (clean and reseat connectors) to $1,200 (HVIL harness or service plug assembly).
