P0962 means the TCM sees the pressure control solenoid A (also called the EPC or line pressure solenoid) control circuit pulled low — either the wire is shorted to ground, the solenoid coil is shorted internally, or the TCM driver itself has failed in a way that holds the circuit at ground. The EPC solenoid is the brain of the transmission's hydraulic system; it modulates line pressure across the entire pressure range, typically 50-90 psi at idle / light throttle and 150-260 psi at full throttle, by varying its duty cycle. When this circuit fails low, the symptom is usually immediate: harsh shifts, TCC slipping under load, and a transmission that feels like it's hammering itself. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Pan-drop and ohm the EPC solenoid — most domestic EPC solenoids ohm at 3-7 ohms at room temperature (lower than shift solenoids because they're current-controlled rather than voltage-driven); a reading under 2 ohms means an internally shorted coil. (2) Disconnect the solenoid at the case connector and check whether the P0962 returns with the solenoid out of circuit — if the code persists with the connector disconnected, the short is in the harness or the TCM driver. (3) Inspect the internal harness lead frame for chafing or melted insulation against the case — internal shorts to ground are the classic source of P0962 on transmissions that have run with low fluid and overheated. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: a failed TCM driver looks identical to a shorted solenoid from the customer's seat — replacing the solenoid on a vehicle with a dead driver gets you a $500 part swap and the same code 10 miles later.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: GM 4L60E and 4L80E both throw P0962 frequently — the EPC solenoid is a wear item on these transmissions and TCC slipping is often the first symptom that brings the truck in, with the P0962 showing up shortly after. GM 6L80 sees P0962 from internal harness chafe against the case and from valve body bore wear at the EPC regulator. Ford 6R80 throws P0962 from the lead-frame internal harness failure that affects the entire solenoid pack — a single lead frame replacement clears multiple solenoid codes simultaneously. Aisin AS68RC (used in 2008-2010 Dodge Ram 4500 / 5500 and Sterling Bullet medium-duty trucks) is a P0962 magnet — the EPC solenoid fails on a predictable schedule and the valve body design makes the failure mode more aggressive on the line pressure side. Estimated repair: $400 to $2,500.
