P0692 means the Fan 1 control circuit is reading high when the PCM expected it low, indicating an open circuit or a short to power on the control side. Cheapest-first ladder: key-on engine-off, unplug the fan 1 relay or fan control module and measure the control wire voltage at the harness connector; on a low-side-switched driver it should sit at battery voltage with the PCM not commanding (12.6 V key-on, 13.8 to 14.2 V running). Command the fan on with a scan tool and watch for the control wire to drop to 0 V; if it stays at battery voltage, the PCM is not pulling low (open in the wire between PCM and relay, or failed PCM driver). Measure relay coil resistance at the relay itself (50 to 90 ohms typical for a 40 A automotive relay); infinite resistance confirms an open coil and a failed relay. On PWM fan control modules (Ford F150 5.0, GM 6.2), measure the FCM input drive line with the scan tool commanding 50% duty; you should see a clean square wave swinging 0 to 5 V or 0 to 12 V depending on the driver type. System voltage drop across the fan power feed terminal should stay under 0.3 V under load when the fan is finally commanded on. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: fan resistor packs are the common consumable on multi-speed fan systems. Ford, GM, and Toyota all use 3-step fan resistor packs that burn open at the high-current stage; on P0692 specifically the symptom often presents as fan won't come on at all because the PCM has disabled the output after seeing the circuit fault flag, leading techs to assume a dead fan motor and replace the assembly. Pull the resistor pack first, ohm each step (typical readings 0.3, 0.6, and 1.5 ohm for low/med/high); any reading of infinite is the failed stage. Replace the pack, $40 to $120, not the whole fan.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2011-2014 Ford F150 5.0 Coyote with the PWM fan via FCM-A relay throws P0692 from FCM-A pigtail solder joint cracking open under heat cycling, which on this platform sometimes presents as low (P0691) and sometimes as high (P0692) depending on which way the joint separates; redesigned FCM with crimped pigtail is the fix, $150 to $260. 2007-2014 GM Silverado/Tahoe/Yukon with the dual-system (clutched primary + electric secondary) throws P0692 from the secondary fan relay coil opening internally after about 100k miles; $30 to $50 relay. 2007-2017 Toyota Camry V6 2GR-FE dual fan with resistor pack throws P0692 when the pack itself has open windings on the high stage or the pigtail connector at the pack has pulled back from a previous repair attempt; $50 to $120. 2006-2015 Honda Civic/Accord PWM single fan (1A circuit) throws P0692 when the fan motor itself fails open and the PCM sees no current draw at command; verify with a current clamp on the power feed before condemning anything, $180 to $320 fan replacement. Estimated repair: $30 to $400.
