P0687 sets when the GPCM detects its supply voltage has gone ABOVE the upper operating threshold — typically over 16V key-on or over 17V running. The module has internal overvoltage protection but flags the condition before damage occurs. This is almost always a charging-system fault, not a module fault, so the cheapest-first ladder starts at the alternator: (1) Scan live data and watch GPCM supply voltage against PCM-reported system voltage with engine running at 1500 RPM and a load on (headlights, blower, rear defrost) — both should sit at 13.5-14.7V. Anything above 15V means runaway alternator field control. (2) Test the alternator with a DMM at the B+ post — over 15V means failed internal regulator on a non-PCM-controlled alternator, or a failed alternator command from the PCM on a smart-charge system. (3) Check the GPCM supply circuit for crossed wiring — a recent repair that ran the 12V feed onto a parallel circuit (e.g., aftermarket upfitter relays) can stack voltages momentarily. Target thresholds: 12-14V running normal, 11.5V min during glow event, 16V hard ceiling for the GPCM. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: a failed alternator that intermittently over-volts can kill the GPCM internal protection circuits over weeks of operation, so replacing the alternator first and then re-running the test for 100 miles before condemning the module saves a $500-800 GPCM swap that wouldn't have stopped the recurrence.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke commonly throws P0687 when one of the dual alternators (it has two) fails its internal regulator and the surviving alternator's PCM-controlled output briefly overshoots compensating — the fix is the failed alternator, not the GPCM. 2011-2016 GM 6.6L Duramax LML throws P0687 after aftermarket battery upgrades where the new batteries have lower internal resistance and the existing alternator's regulator hunts; a PCM software update from GM addresses some cases. 2007-2018 Mercedes Sprinter OM642 throws P0687 from a failed voltage regulator on the Bosch alternator; the brush-pack/regulator is a separate serviceable unit on these. 2003-2009 Dodge Ram 5.9L/6.7L Cummins with aftermarket lift-pump or auxiliary-light installs throws P0687 when a poorly grounded accessory feeds back voltage spikes through the GPCM supply during switching events. Estimated repair: $250 (alternator regulator) to $900 (full alternator + GPCM if the module took damage).
