P0686 sets when the GPCM detects its own supply voltage has dropped below the operating threshold — typically below 9-10V during a glow event when it expected 11.5V minimum, or below 8V key-on. A glow plug control module needs solid battery feed to switch 30-80A of glow current per cylinder, so anything that softens that feed sets the code. The cheapest-first ladder: (1) Load-test the batteries — on dual-battery diesels (Powerstroke, Duramax, Cummins) one weak battery in parallel drags the whole system down and the GPCM sees the dip first; replace any battery below 600 CCA or showing >0.4V differential between the pair. (2) Voltage-drop test the GPCM feed circuit from the underhood relay block to the module input pin — anything over 0.3V drop under load means corroded relay terminals, a fusible-link going high-resistance, or a failed master power relay. (3) Inspect the GPCM's dedicated fuse and the megafuse on the battery feed — fusible-link corrosion is a known killer on these. Live data target: supply voltage should be 12-14V running, hold above 11.5V during a 10-second cold-start glow cycle, and never sag below 9V. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: a high-resistance battery cable terminal looks identical to a failed GPCM on the scan tool — both report supply voltage low — and a $20 terminal cleanup saves a $600 GPCM replacement that wouldn't have fixed anything.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2003-2010 Ford 6.0L/6.4L Powerstroke is the king of P0686 — the dual-battery setup ages unevenly, the driver-side battery (closer to the GPCM) hides a soft cell, and the GPCM throws the code on the first cold morning below 40F. Ford TSBs on this platform repeatedly call out battery match + fusible-link inspection before module replacement. 2006-2016 GM 6.6L Duramax sets P0686 when the GPCM mounting bracket corrodes through and the module's ground reference drifts — looks like low supply because the differential collapses; the fix is the bracket and a new ground strap, not the module. 2007-2018 Mercedes/Dodge Sprinter OM642 throws P0686 from corroded battery-to-starter cable terminals dragging system voltage during glow. 2001-2006 VW TDI (ALH, BEW) with the older PD glow system throws P0686 from a failed glow plug relay (relay 109) that hands the GPCM intermittent power. Estimated repair: $120 (battery + terminals) to $850 (GPCM + harness on a 6.0L Powerstroke).
