P0684 sets when the Glow Plug Control Module (GPCM) and the PCM disagree on what the GPCM is reporting back over the dedicated communication line — either the message frame is invalid, the cycle count is implausible, or the response lag exceeds the PCM's window. This is a communication-range fault, not a supply-voltage fault, so don't start by yanking the module. The cheapest-first ladder: (1) Visual the GPCM connector and its harness — on diesels this connector lives in a heat/oil/road-salt zone and 60%+ of P0684 tickets are corroded or backed-out pins, $0 fix with a pin-pick and dielectric grease. (2) Scan live data and watch the GPCM supply voltage with engine running — it should sit at 12-14V (charging-system voltage) with the engine running and 11.5V minimum during a cold-start glow event. If supply is in spec, the issue is communication-side. (3) Backprobe the GPCM communication wire to the PCM with a scope or DMM — a clean 0-5V or CAN waveform means the module is talking; a flat line or noise means broken wire, bad ground, or dead module. The expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: a corroded ground stud at the GPCM mounting bracket can intermittently fail the comm line because the module's internal reference shifts — verify the ground with a voltage-drop test (under 0.1V from GPCM ground stud to battery negative) before quoting a $400-700 GPCM replacement.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2003-2010 Ford 6.0L/6.4L Powerstroke (F-250/F-350/Excursion) is the most common P0684 in North American diesel shops — the GPCM mounts to the left valve cover and gets cooked by exhaust heat and dripped on by the fuel-bowl assembly above it, corroding both the module case and its 9-pin connector simultaneously. 2011-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke moved the GPCM but kept the same heat-soak failure profile. 2006-2016 GM 6.6L Duramax LBZ/LMM/LML throws P0684 when the GPCM (mounted near the fuel filter housing above the bank) gets dripped on by a leaking fuel-filter head or a weeping coolant crossover — the module is sealed but the connector pins are not, and electrolytic corrosion creeps from the connector into the module. 2007-2018 Mercedes Sprinter / Dodge Sprinter with the OM642 3.0L V6 diesel throws P0684 from harness chafe where the GPCM lead routes across the top of the bank in a dirty engine compartment. Estimated repair: $150 (clean connector + ground) to $900 (GPCM replacement + harness repair on a Powerstroke).
