P0683 means the ECU lost or corrupted communication with the Glow Plug Control Module — the GPCM and PCM normally talk over a dedicated CAN bus at 500 Kbps (or J1939 on heavy-duty platforms), exchanging glow-on commands, per-cylinder fault status, and coolant-temp-derived duty cycle targets. When that comm link drops or returns malformed messages, P0683 sets and the engine typically loses cold-start glow function entirely until the comm is restored. The cheapest-first diagnostic ladder: (1) Scan the network and confirm the GPCM module ID is responding — most pro-grade scanners (Snap-on, Autel, Ford IDS, GM GDS2) will show the GPCM as no-comm or module-not-responding if the bus is down; if the module shows as present but P0683 is current, the data exchange is corrupted, not the link. (2) Check power and ground at the GPCM — most modules sit on a hot-at-all-times fused 12V (battery feed) plus an ignition-switched wake signal; a dropped ground at the inner fender mount is the #1 cause and resolves with a wire-brush cleanup. (3) Verify CAN bus integrity with a scope or DVOM — pin-to-pin resistance should be 60 ohms across CAN-H and CAN-L (two 120-ohm terminating resistors in parallel); 120 ohms means one terminator is open, 0 ohms means a shorted bus, and infinite means a wire-broken bus. (4) If power, ground, and bus all check out, the GPCM itself is failed and needs replacement (and reflash on most platforms). Test resistance INDIVIDUALLY at the glow plug terminal — pulling a shorted plug measures 0 ohms; an open plug measures infinite; a marginally weak plug measures 4+ ohms cold and is the most common cold-start hard-start root cause. Replace as a set on diesel engines — mixed-age plugs cause progressive failure.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2003-2007 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke V8 is the platform that defined P0683 in North American shop work — the classic 6.0 GPCM (mounted on the driver's inner fender behind the battery) fails routinely during the EGR-spool-up era of the truck's life, and Ford released updated F0 / R0 / S0 series modules to address the failures; the latest revision is generally the most reliable, and several recall and customer-satisfaction programs covered specific VIN ranges. Replacing the GPCM on a 6.0 without re-pinning the connector is a 30-minute job; the trap is condemning the module when the real fault is corroded ground at the inner fender bolt. 2007-2018 Mercedes Sprinter (T1N and NCV3) commonly throws P0683 on cold mornings when the CAN gateway loses the GPCM during initial wake-up — Mercedes TSBs reference both gateway reflashes and harness repairs near the engine control module. 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke throws P0683 from the same module-family failure pattern as the 6.0, with the added wrinkle that the 6.4's GPCM is integrated with the FICM in some build dates. 2009-2014 VW/Audi 2.0 TDI throws P0683 from comm faults at the K-line gateway. Estimated repair: $250 (ground-strap cleanup) to $1,800 (full GPCM replacement with reflash).
