P0626 sets when the ECU monitors the generator (alternator) field-control circuit and the signal doesn't match commanded behavior - either the field driver isn't responding to PWM command, or the alternator's L-terminal feedback is implausible. Modern smart-charge alternators are PCM-controlled: the ECU commands a target voltage via a duty-cycled field control, and the alternator reports back via the L-terminal/Lin-bus. P0626 is the range/performance fault on that loop. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Load-test the alternator and battery with a carbon-pile or electronic load tester at a starting/charging shop - a healthy charging system holds 13.8-14.7V under load with the alternator commanded high; a failing alternator that won't field-up reads 12-12.4V and confirms the alternator itself is dying. (2) Inspect the alternator-to-ECU control wire and ground straps - corroded or loose engine-to-chassis grounds elevate ground reference and cause field-control mismatches that look like alternator failure. (3) Scope the field-control PWM signal at the alternator with a lab scope - square-wave PWM that varies with load command means the ECU is doing its job; flat-line or stuck duty cycle means the ECU's driver or the harness is the fault. The 20-minute load-test + ground check catches almost all P0626s without parts.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2007-2012 GM full-size trucks and SUVs (Silverado, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Avalanche) with the AC Delco smart-charge alternator throws P0626 frequently from a failed alternator regulator - GM TSB coverage exists and many alternators are replaced as a unit. 2011-2017 Chrysler 200 / Dodge Avenger / Jeep Compass throws P0626 from a known L-terminal connector issue at the alternator plug - clean and re-seat fixes it before parts. 2008-2014 Cadillac CTS / SRX with the 3.6L throws P0626 from the field-control circuit ground at the cylinder head loosening over heat cycles. 2013-2018 Ford Fusion / Escape with the 1.5L / 2.0L EcoBoost throws P0626 from corroded alternator-to-PCM communication wires routed near the battery tray.
