OBD-II Code · Sensors
P0501
VSS Range/Performance
VSS signal out of expected range during driving.
Common symptoms
- CEL
- Speedo glitches
Likely causes
- Failed VSS
- Damaged tone wheel
- Wiring
Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: failed vss.
- Cost & scope. $100-$400
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure
P0501 means the PCM sees a vehicle speed signal but it is erratic, out of range, or disagrees with another speed reference such as wheel-speed sensors from ABS or the transmission output shaft sensor. Unlike P0500, the signal exists, it just fails a rationality check. Cheapest-first diagnosis: read VSS in live data while a helper drives at a steady 30 mph and watch for dropouts, spikes, or stepping. A clean Hall-effect VSS at 30 mph holds roughly 150 to 240 Hz depending on tone-ring tooth count, and reads should track within 2 mph of the ABS wheel-speed average. If you see the VSS Hz drop momentarily to zero or jump to 1000+ Hz, the tone ring is chipped or magnetized with metal debris, or the air gap is wrong from a loose sensor bolt. Pull the sensor and inspect the tip for ferrous fuzz, which is the cheapest find on the list. The expensive misdiagnosis is reflashing the PCM or replacing the transmission when the actual fix is a $20 tone ring cleaning or a sensor air-gap reshim.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 1999 to 2007 GM full-size trucks (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon) with 4WD show classic speedometer drop-out and P0501 from the NP246/NP263 transfer case speed sensor, the fluid migrates up the wiring and corrodes the connector, GM TSB 02-04-21-004. 2005 to 2010 Honda Odyssey and 2003 to 2008 Honda Pilot set P0501 from VSS failure in the transmission, Honda service bulletin covers the countershaft speed sensor. 2004 to 2008 Ford F-150 with 5.4 sets P0501 from the OSS in the 4R75W picking up clutch debris on the tone wheel. 2007 to 2013 Jeep Wrangler JK sets P0501 from rear axle speed sensor magnetized by brake dust and metal shavings. Estimated repair: $120 to $550.
