P0487 means the EGR Throttle Position Sensor is reporting a range/performance fault — the sensor is electrically alive but the position feedback doesn't match what the ECM expects based on commanded throttle position or doesn't change correctly across the stroke. The 'EGR throttle' is a butterfly valve in the intake path used on diesels and some lean-burn gas engines to create vacuum that pulls EGR gas into the intake; without intake throttling, low-load EGR flow stalls. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Visually inspect the EGR throttle body — these butterflies sit directly downstream of the EGR mixing point and catch every soot particle that doesn't make it through the intake; severe carbon buildup binds the butterfly mechanically and the position sensor correctly reports that the butterfly isn't moving where commanded. (2) Scan live data: EGR throttle position should scale 0.5-4.5V across 0-100% open (calibration-dependent, with some platforms reading 0.5V open and 4.5V closed). Healthy stroke time is 200-500ms across the full range. Compare commanded vs actual position across a bidirectional sweep — divergence above 5% confirms either mechanical bind or sensor drift. (3) Backprobe sensor signal, 5V reference, and ground with a DMM — reference 5.0V ± 0.1V, ground close to battery negative, signal smooth across stroke without dropouts. (4) Pull the throttle body and clean with a non-petroleum carb cleaner; do NOT use spray cleaners on the position-sensor face, only the butterfly and bore. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: diesel EGR throttles seize from soot accumulation — clean before replacing; a $20 cleaning saves the $400 throttle body. Run an active regen first to clear EGR-path buildup if scan tool supports it.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2009-2015 VW/Audi 2.0 TDI EA189 (Jetta, Passat, Golf, A3, Q5) is the most common P0487 platform in independent diesel shops — the EGR throttle valve sits directly behind the EGR cooler outlet and soots up severely; the documented fix is throttle-body cleaning at every EGR cooler service, typically every 80-120k miles. The dieselgate-era EA189s saw P0487 spike after the emissions software update increased EGR flow rates and accelerated soot loading. 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke uses an intake throttle that fails the same way under heavy soot loading, often paired with DPF and EGR codes. 2011-2018 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke uses a similar throttle but with a more robust actuator design; P0487 there usually traces to a failed position sensor element rather than mechanical bind. 2007-2016 Duramax LMM/LML uses an electric butterfly upstream of the EGR mixing point with similar soot-fouling failure modes. 2007-2018 RAM Cummins 6.7L uses an intake air heater grid plus a throttle valve in some configurations; P0487 typically points to soot or grid debris. Common diesel concern: soot-bound EGR throttles from extended highway non-regen cruise — recommend active regen via scan tool before parts.
