P0479 means the Exhaust Back Pressure Control Valve is reporting an intermittent circuit or performance fault — the ECM sees the actuator working correctly most of the time but registered a transient out-of-range event long enough to fail rationality but not long enough to set a hard P0477 or P0478. Intermittents on actuators are usually electrical (harness, connector, ECM driver) but soot-related mechanical intermittents are also common on diesels because partially-fouled valves slip in and out of expected stroke. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Wiggle-test the actuator harness and connector with bidirectional control commanded and scan tool watching live position, current, and back pressure feedback — any blip in the live data localizes the mechanical fault point. (2) Verify ranges across multiple stroke cycles: duty cycle should sweep 0-100% with corresponding position feedback 0-90 degrees and current draw 0.5-2.0A; transient spikes or dropouts mean either a partial harness break or a partial mechanical bind. (3) Inspect the EBP valve butterfly visually — a butterfly that's 70% soot-fouled will stroke correctly under light load but bind intermittently under hard command, especially as the actuator warms up and clearances change. (4) Check the connector seal and pigtail for moisture migration — corroded pins create high-resistance joints that show up as intermittent current dropouts. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: diesel EBP valves seize from soot accumulation and intermittents are the early warning before full seizure — clean before replacing; a $20 cleaning saves the $300 valve. Run an active regen first to clear the buildup if scan tool supports it.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2003-2007 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke throws P0479 as the precursor warning before a full P0475/P0476/P0477/P0478 cascade — the valve is partially soot-fouled and slipping in and out of spec, and disassembly and cleaning at this stage saves the actuator. 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke shows the same early-warning pattern and additionally tends to abort active regens when the EBP valve is intermittent, accelerating the soot cycle. 2007-2018 RAM Cummins 6.7L VGT vanes intermittents typically point to the VGT actuator solenoid or vane stem cleanliness; an intermittent here is the cue to schedule a turbo clean before the vanes fully seize. 2007-2016 Duramax LMM/LML EGR cooler bypass intermittents usually trace to a partial harness chafe or to soot fouling at the bypass valve. 2009-2014 VW 2.0 TDI EGR throttle valve intermittents almost always trace to motor-brush wear that's not yet bad enough to set a hard code. Common diesel concern: soot-bound EBP valves from extended highway non-regen cruise — recommend active regen via scan tool before condemning the valve or actuator. Estimated repair: $20 (cleaning) to $1,200 (full valve service + active regen).
