P0476 means the Exhaust Back Pressure Control Valve is moving, but the resulting back pressure (or position) is outside the ECM's expected window for the commanded duty cycle — this is the classic 'range/performance' fault that says the part is electrically alive but mechanically not doing its job. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Visually inspect the valve butterfly and stem — soot accumulation on the butterfly reduces effective restriction even when the actuator reports full closure, so the commanded back pressure target is never reached. (2) Scan live data and watch commanded vs. actual back pressure during a bidirectional valve sweep. Expected ranges by platform: gas turbo applications target 5-30 psi back pressure at commanded restriction, diesel platforms target 30-50 psi at full restriction with the exhaust brake engaged. Position feedback should track command within 5 degrees across the 0-90 degree sweep, and motor current should sit in the 0.5-2.0A band during steady-state hold. Position tracking command but back pressure not building means a mechanical problem (sooty butterfly, leaking exhaust upstream of the valve, cracked manifold dumping pressure). (3) Smoke-test the exhaust upstream of the valve — a cracked exhaust manifold or leaking up-pipe gasket bleeds off back pressure and makes a perfectly good valve look broken. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: diesel EBP valves seize from soot accumulation — clean before replacing; a $20 cleaning saves the $300 valve. Run an active regen first to clear the buildup if scan tool supports it.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2003-2007 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke throws P0476 when the EBP control valve butterfly has enough soot buildup that even fully-commanded closure doesn't reach target back pressure — disassembly and cleaning is the standard fix and is documented in OEM bulletins. Watch for cracked up-pipes feeding the turbo on the 6.0L too; they crack at the bellows and bleed boost upstream of the EBP valve, mimicking a bad valve. 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke pairs P0476 with DPF regen codes when the valve can't generate enough exhaust heat to support regen. 2011-2016 Duramax LML and 2017+ L5P run the EGR cooler bypass valve with similar performance-fault logic; a sticky bypass valve trips functionally identical codes. 2007-2018 RAM Cummins 6.7L throws P0476 when the VGT vanes are soot-bound and can't achieve the commanded restriction; the turbo cleaning service is the canonical fix and runs ~$400-800 in labor depending on access. 2009-2014 VW 2.0 TDI uses an EGR throttle valve with similar performance monitoring. Common diesel concern: soot-bound EBP valves and cracked up-pipes from extended highway non-regen cruise mimic each other — recommend active regen and smoke-test before parts. Estimated repair: $20 (cleaning) to $1,400 (VGT clean + up-pipe gaskets + labor).
