P0475 means the Exhaust Back Pressure Control Valve has a general circuit or function malfunction — the ECM commanded the valve to move and the position feedback or current draw didn't match expected. The EBP control valve (sometimes called an exhaust restrictor or exhaust brake butterfly) sits in the exhaust stream and restricts flow to either (a) warm the engine and aftertreatment system faster on cold start, or (b) provide exhaust-brake retarding force on heavy diesel platforms. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Visually inspect the valve actuator — diesel EBP valves get caked with soot on the butterfly and the actuator linkage seizes from oxidation, especially on trucks that idle a lot. A frozen actuator linkage shows up as P0475 because the valve can't move when commanded. (2) Scan live data and command the valve actuator on/off with bidirectional control: a healthy valve sweeps from 0-100% duty cycle, position feedback should track 0-90 degrees of rotation, and motor current draw should land between 0.5-2.0A during the command stroke. Any deviation — no movement, stalled current, or position feedback that lags command by more than 200ms — confirms valve fault. (3) Check actuator power and ground at the connector with a DMM under bidirectional command; should see full battery voltage and a clean ground return. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: diesel EBP valves seize from soot accumulation — clean before replacing; a $20 cleaning saves the $300 valve. Run an active regen first to clear the buildup if scan tool supports it; many seized valves free up after a full regen cycle and never need parts.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2003-2007 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke uses an EBP control valve as part of its cold-start strategy — the valve closes on a cold start to back-pressure the exhaust and accelerate warm-up; it seizes from soot and throws P0475 almost on schedule around 80-120k miles. The fix on the 6.0L is usually disassembly and cleaning, not replacement, because the valve body is robust but the butterfly stem fouls. 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke uses a similar valve with the added complication that it interacts with DPF regen logic; a seized valve aborts regens. 2007-2016 Duramax LMM/LML doesn't use an EBP control valve in the traditional sense but uses an electric butterfly in the intake/EGR path that throws functionally similar codes when soot-bound. 2007-2018 RAM Cummins 6.7L runs an integral exhaust brake actuator on the turbo VGT vanes — a P0475 on a Cummins almost always traces to the VGT actuator solenoid or the vanes themselves being soot-frozen; pulling the turbo and cleaning the vanes is the canonical fix. 2009-2014 VW 2.0 TDI uses a similar throttle valve in the intake that fails the same way. Common diesel concern: soot-bound EBP valves from extended highway non-regen cruise — recommend active regen via scan tool before parts. Estimated repair: $20 (cleaning) to $1,200 (full valve + actuator + labor on a Cummins VGT).
