P0472 means the Exhaust Back Pressure (EBP) sensor is reporting a voltage below the ECM's calibrated low threshold — typically below 0.2-0.5V on a 0-5V analog sensor or below the equivalent digital floor on a CAN-based sensor. Cheapest-first ladder on a shop floor: (1) Unplug the EBP sensor and inspect the connector for soot, oil, or water intrusion — diesel EBP sensors mount on a tube that bolts directly to the exhaust manifold and the connector ends up living in a heat-soaked, oil-misted hellscape; a $5 wire brush and a dab of dielectric grease fixes maybe 20% of P0472s. (2) Scan live data and compare EBP psi to expected: a healthy naturally-aspirated gas engine reads 0-2 psi at idle and climbs to 5-10 psi at WOT; a stock turbo gas engine reads 1-3 psi at idle and 15-30 psi at full boost; a diesel reads 1-4 psi at idle and 30-50 psi at full load with the exhaust brake engaged. P0472 means the sensor is reading flat or near-zero when the engine is loaded — almost always a clogged sensor tube (carbon-packed orifice the gas can't reach) or a broken signal wire shorted to ground. (3) Backprobe the sensor signal wire with a DMM at key-on engine-off — should sit at the sensor's reference voltage (usually 0.5V or thereabouts); a hard 0V means short-to-ground in the harness, a floating reading means open circuit. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: diesel EBP sensor tubes plug solid with soot from extended idle and short-trip duty cycles — clean the tube with carb cleaner and a length of MIG wire before condemning the $80-150 sensor; a $5 cleaning saves the part nine times out of ten on a Powerstroke or Cummins.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2003-2007 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke (F-250/350/Excursion) is the most common P0472 ticket in North American diesel shops — the EBP sensor sits on the passenger-side valve cover with a tube routed to the up-pipe and the tube clogs from soot every 40-80k miles; the fix is almost never the sensor, it's pulling the tube and clearing it with carb cleaner and compressed air. 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke runs a similar setup and fails the same way, often paired with DPF-related codes when the truck spends too much time at idle. 2007-2010 Duramax LMM (and to a lesser extent the 2011-2016 LML and 2017+ L5P) uses the EBP signal as part of DPF differential-pressure logic — a low EBP reading shows up alongside P244A/P2459 regen codes; clean the lines before condemning anything. 2007-2009 RAM Cummins 6.7L uses the EBP signal to command the exhaust brake actuator; a P0472 on a Cummins kills exhaust-brake function until the soot is cleared. Common diesel concern: soot-bound EBP plumbing from extended highway non-regen cruise — recommend an active regen via scan tool (Forscan, EdgeFCS, AlfaOBD) before parts. Estimated repair: $20 (DIY tube cleaning) to $450 (sensor + tube + harness pigtail labor).
