P0288

Cylinder 10 Injector Circuit Low

high severityDo not drive$55-$920

V10-only · cyl 10 injector shorted (rearmost).

Common symptoms

  • Misfire cyl 10
  • CEL

Likely causes

  • Shorted injector
  • Connector corrosion

Where to start

  1. Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: shorted injector.
  2. Cost & scope. $55-$920
  3. If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there. Don't keep driving with this one active — risk of damage.
Read the full diagnostic procedure

P0288 sets when the cyl 10 injector circuit reads low, indicating short to ground or internally shorted solenoid, and only applies to V10 engines. Cheapest first: swap injector 10 with another cylinder; PFI windings should ohm 11 to 17, with shorted coils reading 4 to 9 ohms. With the connector disconnected and key on, the driver-side pin should be open to ground; continuity to chassis ground indicates harness short. Pulse width at warm idle on the Ford 6.8L Triton runs 3 to 4 ms; on the BMW S85 V10 it runs 2 to 3 ms. Caveat: the Ford 6.8L V10 cylinder 10 is at the very back of the driver side and harness service requires upper intake removal on most years; do not pull injector connectors with the harness cold-soaked in subfreezing temps, because the connector locking tabs become brittle and snap off, converting a $0 inspection into a $90 pigtail repair.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 1999 to 2010 Ford 6.8L V10 Triton has the same rear-bank harness chafe pattern as P0285/P0286 and also suffers from corrosion at the connector where coolant has weeped from the back of the head; 2006 to 2010 BMW S85 M5/M6 has weak driver-side bank current monitoring; 2003 to 2010 Dodge Viper 8.3L V10 has cracked injector connectors. Estimated repair: $55 to $920.
