P0222 means the throttle/pedal position sensor 'B' signal voltage dropped below the calibrated low threshold, typically under 0.2 volts on a 0-5V circuit. Because TPS/APP sensors run in pairs with opposite-slope curves, the 'B' sensor's normal at-rest voltage depends on the manufacturer's convention — on some platforms TPS-B idles at ~4.5V and falls to ~0.5V at WOT, while on others it idles at ~0.5V and rises to ~4.5V. Cheapest first: pull the FSM for your platform and confirm the expected at-rest voltage for sensor B before declaring it 'low' — a TPS-B that reads 0.4V at idle on a Ford may be perfectly normal while the same reading on a Chrysler is the fault. Back-probe the signal wire at the connector with KOEO and verify the voltage matches scan-tool live data; a mismatch points to ECM-side circuit damage. Confirm 5.0V reference at the connector and good ground (under 0.1V) before touching the sensor itself. Disconnect the sensor and jumper signal to the 5V reference at the harness side; if the scanner immediately swings to maximum voltage, the harness is intact and the sensor is shorted or failed internally. Common low-voltage causes: shorted-to-ground signal wire, lost 5V reference (often from a shorted neighboring sensor on a shared reference bus), corroded connector with one pin not making contact, or a failed sensor element inside the throttle body or pedal assembly. The expensive misdiagnosis: ordering a $300 electronic throttle body when the fault was a $0 corroded connector pin that cleared up after a wire-brush and dielectric-grease repair. Critical safety note: P0222 almost always triggers reduced-power limp mode — do not drive without diagnosis.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2004-2010 Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep with the 3.5L / 3.7L / 4.7L / 5.7L drive-by-wire setup frequently throws P0222 alongside other TPS/APP codes from electronic throttle body failure — the OEM throttle body's internal sensor wears out around 80k-120k miles and Chrysler / Mopar replacements are the durable fix. 2005-2012 Nissan Altima / Maxima / 350Z / 370Z (VQ35 / VQ37) sees P0222 from the electronic throttle body's known sensor-failure pattern; the throttle body is paired to the ECM during a relearn procedure after replacement. 2007-2014 GM full-size truck and SUV (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon) with the 5.3L Vortec / LMG / LC9 sets P0222 from APP sensor failure at the pedal assembly more often than at the throttle body — pedal swap is simpler and resolves the majority of GM truck P0222 cases. 2008-2016 Hyundai / Kia 2.4 Theta II and 3.3L / 3.8L Lambda engines throws P0222 from electronic throttle body sensor failure; on these engines the throttle body is a sealed assembly and is replaced as a unit.
