OBD-II Code · Sensors
P0153
O2 Sensor Slow Response (B2S1)
Bank 2 upstream sensor lazy.
Common symptoms
- CEL
Likely causes
- Aging sensor
- Contamination
Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: aging sensor.
- Cost & scope. $150-$400
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.

P0153 is the bank-2 mirror of P0133 — the bank 2 upstream sensor is too slow. Switching still happens but the response time exceeds the OEM threshold (rounded waveform instead of crisp square-wave on a narrow-band; sluggish lambda tracking on a wideband AFR). Cheapest-first: capture B2S1 voltage at 2,500 RPM steady-state with a scope or graphing scan tool — a healthy narrow-band crosses 0.45V 8+ times per 10 seconds; a P0153 sensor will show 3-5 crosses with visibly rounded peaks. Compare directly against B1S1 (if it switches faster, the bank-2 sensor is genuinely lazy). Common contaminators: silicone from incorrect RTV on bank-2 valve cover; oil migration from a bank-2 VCG leak; coolant from a bank-2 intake manifold gasket on a V engine. Always rule out fuel contamination (silicone, leaded race gas in track cars) before condemning sensor.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2002-2009 Toyota Camry / Avalon / Sienna 1MZ/2GR V6 — bank 2 is front; throws P0153 routinely at 90k-110k miles, replace pair with B1S1. 2003-2007 Honda Accord J30 V6 — bank 2 is front; sets P0153 after non-OEM RTV outgasses from valve cover service. 2007-2014 Ford Edge / Flex / Taurus 3.5L Cyclone — bank 2 is passenger side on the longitudinal-mounted 3.5L (Taurus is transverse, so verify); throws P0153 from age. 2009-2016 Audi Q5 / A4 3.2L FSI V6 — sets P0153 when carbon buildup on the bank-2 intake valves perturbs the exhaust composition pattern the sensor expects. Cost band: $200-$500 for sensor + labor; budget for both upstream sensors as a pair on V engines past 90k.
