Powertrain Diagnostic Code (P0083)
See deep dive below for full diagnostic context.
Common symptoms
- CEL
Likely causes
- See deep dive
Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: see deep dive.
- Cost & scope. $50-$2,000
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure
P0083 is a Bank 2 intake valve control solenoid circuit-low fault, set when the ECM's solenoid driver sees the control circuit pulled below the expected voltage threshold (typically a sustained read below 0.5V on a high-side driver, or feedback consistent with a short to ground) for the calibration debounce window of roughly 0.5 to 2 seconds. The cheapest first move is always the harness: unplug the Bank 2 intake OCV connector, inspect for oil intrusion (a frequent failure mode where a leaking valve-cover gasket wicks oil down into the connector and degrades the silicone seal), check pin tension with a male probe pin, and look for chafe points where the harness branches off the main engine loom. Measure solenoid resistance across the pins — spec is typically 6.7 to 7.7 ohms, with shorts reading below 4 ohms and opens reading infinite. The expensive misdiagnosis is throwing a phaser at this when the real fault was a $45 OCV or a $25 pigtail repair.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2007-2012 Toyota 2GR-FE (Camry V6, Avalon, Sienna, Highlander, Lexus ES350, RX350) is the dominant P0083 vehicle — the Bank 2 (firewall-side) intake OCV is harder to reach, runs hotter, and its coil degrades first; oil-soaked connectors compound it. 2008-2014 Honda J35 V6 (Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, Accord V6) sets P0083 from the rear-bank VTC oil control valve coil failure. 2009-2015 VW/Audi 3.0T V6 supercharged (Q5, Q7, A6, S4) on the Bank 2 intake adjuster control solenoid is a known wear item. 2010-2014 Nissan VQ35DE/VQ37VHR (Maxima, 370Z, Infiniti G37, M37) sets P0083 from Bank 2 intake OCV shorts after long highway-heat soak. Estimated repair: $220 to $720.
