C0241

Chassis/ABS Fault (C0241)

Where to start

  1. Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: see deep dive.
  2. Cost & scope. $50-$2,000
  3. If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure

C0241 means the ABS module is reporting a configuration error — the stored configuration data (VIN, tire size, axle ratio, brake variant, traction-control flag) does not match what the ABS module expects for this vehicle, or the EEPROM where that configuration lives has been corrupted. The diagnostic order: (1) Confirm whether the ABS module was recently replaced, reflashed, or had a battery disconnect — most C0241 cases follow a service event where the as-built configuration did not get rewritten to the new module. The fix is to run the OEM scan tool's variant-coding or configuration-rewrite procedure, which pulls the correct config from the VIN database — $0-$150 at a dealer or capable independent. (2) If no recent service touched the ABS, scan for related codes — C0241 alongside C0561 (configuration not set) on GM trucks usually means the module needs programming, not replacement. (3) Check power and ground at the ABS module — modules pull 12V constant, 12V switched, and a heavy ground; a marginal ground will let the module power up enough to communicate but fail self-test and report config error. Misdiagnosis caveat: never replace an ABS module on a C0241 before attempting variant coding or reflash — a brand-new module ships uncoded and will throw the same code until it is programmed for the specific VIN; $1,200 part swap followed by 'still broken' is the classic shop mistake on this code.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 1999-2007 GM trucks (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche) with the Kelsey-Hayes 325 EBCM are the most common C0241 ticket in North America — the EBCM is famous for solder-joint failure on the internal driver chips, and bench-rebuild specialists (Module Master, ModuleExperts) will refurbish the original board for $180-$300 and ship it back fully programmed vs. a $1,000-$1,400 OEM replacement that still needs dealer programming. 2003-2009 Dodge Ram 1500/2500/3500 throws C0241 from CAB (Controller Antilock Brake) connector corrosion at the master cylinder. 2007-2013 Ford Edge/Lincoln MKX commonly throws C0241 after a battery disconnect because the ABS module lost its stored config and needs an IDS/FORScan rewrite. 2008-2014 Honda Accord/Pilot throws C0241 after wheel bearing or hub replacement when the new hub's tone-ring count does not match what the ABS module expects (look for aftermarket hubs with the wrong tooth count). Estimated repair: $0 (reflash) to $1,400 (OEM ABS module plus dealer programming).
