C0235 is a fault in the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) circuit — the EBCM or transmission control module is not seeing a valid output-shaft or transfer-case speed signal during vehicle motion, or the signal is implausible compared to the four wheel-speed sensors. On older vehicles the VSS is a transmission-tailshaft or transfer-case-mounted Hall sensor or variable-reluctance pickup; on newer vehicles the 'VSS' is derived from the wheel-speed sensors over the chassis bus, so C0235 on a newer car often points at a network/bus issue or a sensor-fusion mismatch rather than a single sensor. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Determine which sensor is the actual VSS on the platform you're working on — on Toyota T100/Tacoma/4Runner and most Mopar/GM trucks of the 1990s-2000s the VSS is a discrete sensor mounted on the transfer case or transmission tailshaft and can be ohm-checked (passive VSS: 800-1,800 ohms typical) or scope-checked for a 0-200 Hz AC waveform whose frequency tracks vehicle speed. (2) Live-data the VSS during a road test alongside the wheel-speed sensors — a healthy VSS tracks within 1-2 mph of the average wheel speed; a flat-lined VSS while wheel sensors read correctly is a discrete VSS failure or wiring issue. (3) Inspect the sensor mounting boss on the transfer case or transmission — these threaded ports collect debris and the sensor face gets coated with metallic shavings from the output-shaft drive gear, attenuating the signal. (4) Wiggle-test the VSS connector and the harness routing along the transmission for chafe and heat damage. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: on Mopar 545RFE/68RFE transmissions, the 'VSS' is actually the output-speed sensor inside the transmission and a 'failed VSS' often points at deeper transmission internal damage (worn speed-sensor tone ring on the output shaft) rather than an external sensor — pulling and inspecting the OSS before quoting a transmission overhaul is the cheap check.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 1995-2004 Toyota T100/Tacoma/4Runner/Tundra (early) with transfer-case-mounted VSS commonly throw C0235 from sensor-face contamination — pull, wipe clean, reinstall, code clears, no part needed. 2003-2010 Dodge Ram/Durango with the 545RFE 5-speed automatic throws C0235 from a failed output-speed sensor; the OSS is a $35 part but requires dropping the transmission pan and removing the valve body to access on some model years. 1999-2007 GM trucks with the 4L60E/4L80E throw C0235 from a tailshaft-mounted VSS that's exposed to driveline rust on the connector pins. 2005-2014 Ford F-250/F-350 with the 5R110W TorqShift throws C0235 from output-shaft speed sensor failure inside the transmission, often coincident with a 'no shift' complaint. Estimated repair: $40 to $650.
